FAQ

FAQ – United Way of Central Kansas

What does United Way of Central Kansas do?

United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) is a locally incorporated, non-profit organization that is one of the largest non-governmental sources of funding for health, education, and human services in our region. Through a single community-wide campaign, we efficiently and transparently invest in programs that address our area’s greatest needs.

  • Community Investment: Your contributions support local programs focused on school readiness, health access, senior services, poverty reduction, food security, and child safety.

  • Community Impact: We lead and fund strategic initiatives such as Stuff the Bus, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Laundry Love, Reality U, Box of Love, and #RealWorld to create lasting change.

  • Special Projects: UWCK provides mini-grants to local non-profits and schools each year for targeted projects that address emerging needs.

  • Referral Assistance: We connect individuals with vital services and encourage use of the 2-1-1 helpline for additional resources.

Where does my donation go?

Your gift supports programs and services for Barton and Pawnee County residents. Your donation stays local and helps meet real community needs.

Who manages United Way of Central Kansas?

UWCK is governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors—people who live or work in the community and are committed to improving it. The Board sets policies, funding priorities, and oversees operations.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. UWCK is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and your gift is tax deductible as allowed by law.

How is UWCK accountable?

Our finances are audited annually by an independent accounting firm, and local volunteers carefully review our budget and funding allocations. We also meet United Way Worldwide membership standards for transparency and accountability.

Why give through UWCK instead of directly to a charity?

  • We carefully vet and monitor funded programs, ensuring your donation is used effectively.

  • Your gift combines with hundreds of others to maximize impact.

  • UWCK funding provides reliable, planned support for local agencies, reducing their need for frequent fundraising.

  • Local contributions often help agencies leverage grants and matching funds that bring additional dollars into our community.

Why do funded agencies still fundraise or charge fees?

UWCK funding is designed to supplement, not fully fund, agencies. Strong non-profits have diverse funding sources—including grants, donations, and program revenue—to meet growing community needs. Some programs charge sliding-scale fees so they can stretch limited funds and help more people.

I don’t use these services—why should I give?

Your support helps build a stronger community where everyone can thrive. Even if you don’t need services today, your gift ensures help is there if you, your family, or your neighbors ever do. A healthier, more stable community benefits us all.
