Residents, business leaders, and visitors of Hoisington helped United Way of Central Kansas Stuff the Bus full of much needed items for non-profit groups in Hoisington. The Hoisington Community Food Bank received boxes of food items for the pantry, school supplies will be used to stock backpacks for students, and toiletry items will be used at numerous different agencies to provide those in need with assistance. After all the items were counted, nearly 1,000 items were donated to Stuff the Bus.
Town & Country Supermarket provides support each year for this event. Helping to advertise the event and the room to park the bus. USD 431 provides the bus and the driver. Hoisington Community Food Bank volunteer, Toni Schneweis organizes all the volunteers throughout the day. Our Community Partners in Hoisington, including the Food Bank, Hoisington Historical Society, the Commission on Aging, and Toys for Tots give a couple hours of their time to help work the bus and encourage donations. The First United Methodist Church helped to unload dozens of boxes off the bus and into the food pantry. Clara Barton Hospital collected items beforehand and donated boxes full of items to support this event.
After all the items are collected from the UWCK Stuff the Bus events in Hoisington, Great Bend, Ellinwood, and Larned, our 23 Community Partners get to “shop” for the items they need most. While the Food Bank will keep the pantry items they need, items such as personal hygiene and school supplies will be distributed to the Family Crisis Center, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas, and ElderCare, all of whom provide much needed services in Hoisington and all of Barton County. This event helps to take the financial burden off our Community Partners so they can focus more on the work that they are doing in our communities and have to worry less about how they will afford to stock their shelves with the items their clients need.
